Chatsworth House interest. A rare William & Mary painted leather fire bucket, dated 1693, formed of one piece of hide with stitched seam, foot and rope-bound rim, retaining one leather handle-loop and iron ring, painted in red with earl's coronet, D and 1693, 27.5cm h

The initial is that of William Cavendish (1640-1707), 4th Earl and, from 1694, 1st Duke of Devonshire. In 1687 he commissioned William Talman to begin rebuilding Chatsworth, completing the south and east fronts in 1696.
The present bucket is identical to two examples in the Chatsworth Collection and a third (dated 1696) which was sold Bonham's, 3 June 2014, lot 494 (£5,000 inc premium). The 1811 Inventory of the contents of Chatsworth lists "20 leather fire buckets" in the Grotto.

More Information
