AFTER ANGELICA KAUFFMANN R.A. 1744-1807, RURAL SPORTS, CIRCA LATE 18TH CENTURY EN-GRISAILLE WATERCOLOUR COMPOSITION BY A VERY GOOD HAND.
On laid paper, laid to card support, with label verso for Bregazzi & Sons, Carvers, Gilders and Picture Framers, 10 Merrion Row, Dublin. Label dates to circa 1870.

Paper size: 24.4cm x 26.8cm (Sheet has been trimmed to the edges).

Note: This composition was engraved by Francesco Bartolozzi in 1784 and known by the title “Rural Sports”, and was engraved “from a drawing in Woodhouse’s collection’ [un-located]. It was also published with the title “Blind Man’s Bluff’ [ Pate Size: 295mm width x 218mm height ].

There are numerous slight differences between Bartolozzi’s proof copy [ British Museum 1868.0808.2882 ] and the present version, indicating the present work is not a direct copy from the engraved version.

We are grateful to Dr Bettina Baumgartel from the Angelica Kauffmann Research Project for guidance with the cataloguing of this work.
