A violin by Charles Maucotel, mid 19th century, baring maker's label "Carolus Maucotelus fecit Londini 185[?]", two piece back, the body 35cm (13 3/4") long, 58cm long overall, with associated bow and hardcase (at fault)

NOTE: Charles Maucotel was one of the first violin makers to move from Paris to London in the mid 19th century. Although world renowned among the cognoscenti, Maucotel is far from a household name, but his instruments helped to create a golden age of violin making in Britain. His workshop continued production after his death and into the 20th century, but it is early violins like this one that made his reputation and are highly sought after today. Not to be confused with Charles Adolphe Maucotel.

More Information

The back length has been measured as 351mm (see photos).

The violin needs re-stringing and has not been played or tested in any way. The bridge is present but not fitted and may be later than the violin. We are advised that the bow is not original to the violin. The bow has some detached hairs and may have been repaired beneath the wire binding.
