MEDALLION. Calendar Medal, England, 1766, by John Powell, 38mm, brass, this year not in Ackerman, Fine+, small flan flaw. John Powell was the only maker to straddle both the Julian and Gregorian calendars, striking single year calendar medals in an uninterrupted series from 1746 to 1782. Powell was a button-maker with his business at Powell's Yard, 34 Spiceall Street, Birmingham. Reference: Ackerman, "Calendar Medals in the British Museum", The Medal, Autumn 2004.
