Captain Goodrich arrived in the Cape in 1851 as a lieutenant in the 12th, East Suffolk, regiment. He transferred to the Cape Mounted Riflemen a few months later and served on the Frontier during the Eight of the Eastern Cape wars of dispossession. He was there until 1858. It is during this time he painted Sir George Cathcart and his officers and Major Tylden identifies them all in his 1963 journal article. The various sources report differing number of works by Goodrich, but no more than three oil paintings could be identified. According to Major Tylden one is in the Museum Africa, and another with the 12th Royal Lancers. The third was in the Grahamstown City Hall and from Major Tylden’s detailed description it is likely to be the current work on offer.
