Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519) - The Codex Atlanticus (Il codice atlantico) - 1894 - Ulrico Hoepli edition. The lot comprising of complete Folder I & Folder II. Paper sleeves with damage commensurate with age.

Ulrico Hoepli, Milano, MCXXXLXXXXIV '.

This codex is one of Leonardo's most comprehensive and important 'notebooks' ever created in history; Leonardo continuously worked on it between 1478 and 1519. After his death, the sheets were scattered and lost until the Italian sculptor Pompeo Leoni laboriously collected them and re-ordered them. In 1637, the Biblioteca Ambrosiana cem officially into possession of the Codex.

In 1885 the work was entrusted by the government to the Regia Accademia dei Lincei. The work, published in only 280 numbered copies by the Hoepli publishing house, began publication in 1891 and was completed in 1904. In addition to the reproductions, there was a double transcription of the texts: one faithful to the original for scholars, the other rendered in modern form for general readers. For the subscribers, each of the files cost 40 lire, for a total of 1360 Italian lire (equal to approximately 6000 Euros in 2015).
