Winston Leathers: 1932-2004 born in Miami, Manitoba Studied at the
University of Manitoba School of Art, where he became a professor of Art and taught for 24 years.
Leading artist in the Western American Modernist movement of the 1950s-60s.
Leathers style of art reflected his fascination with Eastern spirituality(Zen Buddhism), admiration for the Josef Alber’s School through experimenting with new techniques.
Apart from his intensive teaching career, he exhibited in more than 30 solo shows and 140 group exhibitions throughout Canada, the United States, Europe, Japan and the Caribbean.
Clement Greenberg in his 1963 review of Modernist art in Western Canada, noted that Leathers was the only Winnipeg painter whose work “ looked aggressively up- to-date”.
