Historical Armaments Interest - an important Victorian letter discussing the earliest known reference to a "muzzle brake" invention to counteract the recoil if guns, sent by Hiram Maxim of The Maxim Gun Co. Limited to Edward Reynolds Esq. of Vickers Sons of Sheffield, signed by Maxim.
Research Notes: Hiram Maxim, a prolific inventor, known as the first true machine gun inventor alongside many other inventions used in arms to this day for example, the silencer.
Vickers Sons later merge with Maxim's Company becoming Vickers Sons & Maxim, evidence of this can be found on a stone lintel on the old Head Office on Brightside Lane which is monogrammed "V S & M".
Provenance: Found in the offices of the late Ronald Wilson in the 1960's. Ronald was the owner of the Atlas Foundry, Heeley, later Charles Wilson Ltd.
Comes with a letter of interest by The Royal Armouries, written by Peter G Smithurst, senior curator of the weapons department, on headed paper, dated 1999.
