£40
A first period Worcester bowl, mid 18th century circa 1755-1770, of shallow circular form with pie crust rim, hand enamelled with gilt scroll edged floral reserves against a cobalt blue scale ground, blue painted fretted square to base, 21.5cm diameter; with a further similar example enamelled with exotic birds and insects in the manner of James Giles, blue painted fretted square to base, 21cm diameter (at fault) (2)
Floral reserves example shows a hairline crack to the well extending across the diameter of the foot rim, and a small firing crack to the rim. The exotic bird example shows extensive rubbing to one of the birds, but no obvious chips or cracks. Both pieces show glazing faults, surface wear, firing pits and frits, and rubbing to the gilt highlights (more extensive to the exotic bird example).
