UNDERPAID 10c-RATE (VIA U.S.) COVER WITH 1859 5c PAIR, "MORE-TO-PAY" & RARE "CANADIAN-PKT" C.D.S.; 14 Oct. 1864 env.from Quebec (v. fine cds on front) to Yorkshire most unusually franked with a Pair of 1859 5c (perfs. cut at left; the 5c usually only seen on internal Canadian mail; surprisingly rare on covers to GB) cancelled by an unclear Quebec numeral (but tied by the m/s "d8" rate). This 10c franking would have been fine for this cover if it had been sent within Canada, but the rate to GB was 12½c, so there is a (Quebec?) "MORE-TO-PAY [2/3 = 5d]" mark on the front, but on the Allan Line S.S. 'Peruvian' this rate was changed by the PO clerk to the correct m/s "d8" charge (2d deficient + full 6d fine). Rare thus.
