Good French double bass of the Derazey School circa 1875, with flat back, violin corners, original French brass machine heads and endpin unit, the two piece maple back of plainish wood with faint medium curl to the sides, the head of plainish wood, the table of a medium width grain and the varnish of a light reddish-brown colour on a golden ground, length of back 45 1/8", stop length 25", vibrating string length 43 1/4"
**The repair history of this double bass is as follows:
John Castle, Newark, March 1884; Winter & Son, Hull 1887; F.W. (Francis William Calow) branded neck graft and internal label 24 Barton Street, Notts, 1941
This double bass is in reasonable playing condition, there have been restorations on the table and two open cracks one running above the F-hole on the bass side and the other running below the F-hole on the treble side, both clearly visible in the images, there has also been work undertaken on the back and there is a white deposit underneath the varnish on the back treble side, there are various minor old cracks on the ribs and also a crack to the peg box, all repairs and damage are covered in the images provided, personal viewing always advised where possible.
