ENGLISH SCHOOL, CIRCA 1800. PORTRAIT OF ELIZA POOLE (b.1734); AND OF HER SON, THE REVEREND JOHN POOLE OF ENMORE (1770-1857). Two, each quarter length, she wearing a shawl and lace-trimmed bonnet, a label verso indicating that this was painted in 1798; he in dark coat and with clerical bands, holding a book, oil on panel

* The portrait of the Rev. Poole has been ascribed to W. Shuter (Fl.1771-1798). Poole, a keen botanist, was known within the family as `John the Divine` and he wrote `The Village School Improved` (1815)

Provenance: By descent in the family of the sitters. *Condition: She with some craquelure; he with a fine vertical split, some damages and retouching.
