* The portrait of the Rev. Poole has been ascribed to W. Shuter (Fl.1771-1798). Poole, a keen botanist, was known within the family as `John the Divine` and he wrote `The Village School Improved` (1815)
Provenance: By descent in the family of the sitters. *Condition: She with some craquelure; he with a fine vertical split, some damages and retouching.
