MEDALS/OCEAN LINER: An extremely important 22ct gold Royal Mint presentation medal commemorating the Maiden Voyage of the R.M.S. Queen Mary, 1936 by Gilbert Bayes, struck by the Royal Mint, obv., the ship steaming right, two dolphins in the sea, rev., the Manhattan skyline viewed through the Bargate of Southampton, 70 mm ( B.H.M. 4282; Attwood, p. 36), in original Royal Mint blue leather fitted case inscribed "His Majesty The King" Although bronze specimens of this impressive medal were widely distributed, only five examples were struck in gold. These were presented by the Board of the Cunard Line to Queen Mary, King Edward VIII (in place of his late father George V), the President of the United States Franklin D. Roosevelt, Mrs. Roosevelt, and Sir Percy Bates (Chairman of the Cunard Line). Marked RM .916 fine in official Royal Mint blue leather presentation box impressed HIS MAJESTY THE KING, weight 316 grams, diameter 2¼ins. An opportunity to purchase a unique link to Edward VIII and one of the most iconic liners of the 1930s.
