Needlework: An 18th century needlework sampler, worked with trees, seven stars, crowns and seven candlesticks around the Christogram 'IHS' above 'Revelations. Chapter 1st', and excerpts from John's Vision on Patmos 'And in the midst of the seven candlesticks, -one like unto the Son of man, &c. And he had in his right hand seven stars: &c. The seven- stars are the angels of the seven churches: and the seven candlesticks are the seven churches.', possibly Quaker, 18 x 20.5cm, in a glazed ebonised frame.
Needlework: A George III needlework sampler by Paulina Brigg, worked with alphabets, numbers and two poems, one by James Thomson, 'FATHER of light and life, thou GOOD SUPREME...', the other by Nicholas Rowe, 'The bliss of Friendship Vice can never know', signed 'Paulina BRIGG. Guard House. June the 9th 1802', 31.8 x 27.7cm, in a glazed giltwood frame.
Guard House is in New Skipton, North Yorkshire. James Thomson (1700-1748) was a Scottish poet and playwright. His most famous works are The Castle of Indolence and The Seasons.
