SIKH WARS - BATTLE OF CHILLIANWALLAH; Remarkable June 1849 mourning env. to Windsor franked GB 1d red tied by indistinct London numeral and to a Mrs M.Will with contents, datelined at 'Camp Rajcote April 23rd 1849' from a J.M.Will; Lord Gough....has been up to his tricks again. His conduct on the banks of the Ishlum is proof of the extent to which foolhardiness and obstinacy may be carried and the long list of 93 officers who fell in action may be set down as something very little short of so many murders. The regiment was tried so severely as to have 29 officers and 800 men killed before they gave way. It was almost annihilated. Sir Charles Napier's appointment has give great satisfaction in this country. His name is quite enough to shake the confidence of the Sikhs....' Superb contemporary insight into Lord Gough's failures and his replacement by Sir Napier. Cross Reference: GREAT BRITAIN, MOURNING COVERS, MILITARY, MILITARY - GB FORCES OVERSEAS
