This lot and the following Josh Kirby works are from the time Kirby was attending the Liverpool City School of Art from 1943 at the age of 14. He later went on to illustrate book covers for Sir Terry Pratchett’s Discworld Series. Elements of his mythological illustrations and his mastery of anatomy and portraiture (which gave rise to his nickname 'Josh' after Joshua Reynolds) are evident throughout the works he generated during his time in Liverpool. His work covers a wide subject matter from humorous scenes to modernist pieces.
