WWII RAF Coastal Command raid on Sharnhorst selection of items relating to the remarkable war time service of Squadron Leader Alec Richmond Sherwood, including pilots log books, photograph albums, ephemera and other miscellaneous items.
A.R.Sherwood joined the RAF in 1935 and as a Pilot Officer commenced pilot training in 1938. He qualified as a day pilot on the Avro Anson in 1939 and shortly before war broke out he began flying anti-submarine operations from Montrose and Wick, Scotland. In 1940 he qualified to fly the Lockeed Hudson and it was in this aircraft that he attacked the German battleship Scharnhorst at Troudheim, Norway on 11/6/1940. During this operation his aircraft was shot down by a German fighter aircraft and he was forced to bale out. He evaded capture and walked about 120km to Sweden from where he was later returned to his squadron.
He was tasked with the role of training on and then ferrying Boeing B17C bombers from the USA to the UK. He was shipped over to the USA and flew from aerodromes in Sacremento and Seattle. He was entertained at Warner Brothers studios and was photographed with famous film stars including Gary Cooper and James Cagney. On 13/4/1941 he returned to the UK and recommenced anti-submarine operations.
At the end of the war he remained in the RAF and on 1/1/1940 he was mentioned in Dispatches.
