A Japanese ‘iris’ decorated travelling chest, Edo period, late 18th/early 19th century, decorated after Ogata Korin with a carved and colour design of irises along the riverbank around a plank bridge, using the natural wood as a background, bound in iron with iron carrying handles, the pair of doors opening to reveal an arrangement of six drawers, later ebonised stand, chest 123cm wide, 40.5cm deep, height including stand 93cm

Provenance - purchased from Jeremy J. Mason Oriental works of art, 145 Ebury Street, London for £5000, in 1998.

Some losses and retouching to the painted decoration, commensurate with age and use, later stand. The lock to the upper right drawer is currently detached and in a locked position so that the drawer can be accessed, the hinges have a additional later screws and bolts to keep them in position.
