Star Lot: A really special item. A large original limited edition (artist proof) two colour copper plate print using a touche technique to create unusual ink texture featuring a group of figures gathering goods. Signed bottom right by Egyptian artist Gazbia Sirry (1925-2021), a post-war artist who specialised in depictions of women, and dated to 1984. Gazbia's figures seem to be struggling to emerge from the whirlpool of life, or have gathered together for sheer survival in an urban environment gone astray. Gazbia was a highly successful artist who recently sold in Christie's for $67,000.
Mm: 72 x 56 cm (in frame).

Many of Sirry's paintings from the 1950s and 1960s carried important social messages. Gazbia Sirry was a member of the Group of Modern Art, a movement which sought to express an Egyptian identity, formed at the time of the Egyptian revolution in 1952. Her numerous depictions of women and the working class were pertinent to nationalist iconography, contributing to G. Sirry’s acknowledgement in official spheres and earning her State grants and exhibitions at governmental venues. Sirry is one of the many accomplished women artists who have made a mark in the Egyptian arts throughout the twentieth century. She stood out for her dedication to the individual freedom of the Arab woman through her fighting spirit. She excels in auction sales, with works going in the tens of thousands.
