A FOLDER OF TYPE LETTERS 'PALESTINE 1915 - 1918'.
The folder titled 'Copies of Letters + Diaries from Palestine from J.Edward Shaw. Dec 8 1915 to Jan 1918 and from Belgium 1918'. With a small collection of photographs, possibly including the author riding on a camel with Sphinx and pyramid behind. John Edward. Shaw who signed himself 'Eddie' on letters home was a Private number 2221 in the Royal Army Medical Corps attached to the Warwickshire Yeomanry in Egypt, 1st South Midland Mounted Brigade Field Ambulance and other locations. The letters are full of details of his work and life with such comments as 'The prevailing idea about here is that the war will be over before long' written at the end of 1915. 'I think I have got the best job in the whole regiment. ... We just have to look after our own water cart, see that it is in order, and go down to the troughs to get it filled twice a day, and that is the extent of our duties'. Jan 24th 1916. Many descriptions of place and the everyday life of a young member of the RAMC in Egypt, on ship and amongst his comrades, a letter 2nd November 'Our one great topic of conversation is now Demobilisation'. Approximately 104 pages.
