Two mid-19th century mother of pearl fans, both carved, pierced and gilded, the first contained in a silk lined box by “Geslin, Maison Dorée”, the lithographed leaf with a recto scene of a harvest celebration, the villagers to the left with their pipe player and haymaking tools, the landowner’s family to the right, the ladies elegantly attired and carrying fans, the recto simply painted with flowers and gold highlights, guard approx. 27cm; the second fan in similar vein, the lithographed leaf showing a gathering of High Society couples, the ladies wearing 18th silk gowns and the gentlemen in wigs and velvet waistcoats, the verso lightly painted with flowers, guard approx. 28cm (2 + box)
The first fan has an unobtrusive imperfection in the MOP at the head, but is otherwise in good, clean condition with crisp leaf; the seconf fan has 2 broken guards and an earlier repair to one gorge stick. The box is serviceable but in need of repair.
