Richard Lane (1926-2002), well-noted and regarded scholar of Japanese art and literature of the Edo period (1615-1868), who established a reputation as one of the leading experts on Ukiyo-e (''Images of the Floating World''). Later his strong ties to Hawaii, commencing with his appointment to the Honolulu Academy of Arts as Research Associate for Ukiyo-e in 1959, led to them in 2003, after Lane's death, acquiring a substantial collection of Japanese, Chinese and Korean paintings, prints and rare books from his estate. 2) The Honolulu Museum of Art (formerly the Honolulu Academy of Arts), until their de-acquisition of some portions of the collection in 2018.
