A SOUTH AFRICA MEDAL 1879 TO RAAFS HORSE.
A South Africa Medal with 1879 clasp named to I.J. Lithauer Transvaal. Presumably for Raafs Horse or Raafs Transvaal Rangers. A number of Volunteer irregular units were raised during the Zulu emergency and following the war a number of medals were given to the commanding officers for award to their volunteers. Many of these awards will not have been engraved, some will have been engraved locally, it is possible that this is such an award. The Transvaal Rangers were raised in 1878 and commanded by Captain Pieter Johannes Raaf, the group consisted of approximately 60 European volunteers supported by 148 men of the Transvaal Mounted Rifles. It is recorded that 243 medals were awarded to the Transvaal Rangers, 101 of them with the 1878 clasp and 122 with the 1879 clasp.
