R.M.S. TITANIC: Extremely rare unpublished photograph of Harold Thomas Cottam, the Wireless Operator on Carpathia who received Titanic's CQD distress signals. The photograph is from the album of Dr Frank Blackmarr, a passenger onboard the Carpathia, and alerted by Marconi operator Harold Cottam of the Titanic's collision, went on to record his observations and document the ensuing rescue. He was one of the first to give details of the sinking to the press. The photograph is mounted to a page from Blackmarr's personal album of notes and is inscribed in pen by Blackmarr. "Harold Thomas Cottam/The Stone Yard/Church Street/Southwell England/Received CQD from Titanic at 12:45 - rapped on our door as he went to inform officers of Carpathia. Before retiring for the night he always put on his Marconi receivers to pick up the nearest ship to say 'Good Night'. Our stateroom was his rendezvous when he was not busy. Not Published". 6¾ins. x 6ins.
