WW2 Royal Navy Historic Uniform of Surgeon Commander A.J. Burden HMS Ajax.
The full dress uniform of Surgeon Commander Alexander James Burden who was present onboard HMS Ajax during the engagement with the German battleship Admiral Graf Spee on the River Plate
Comprising:
Bicorn hat with bullion decoration, tailor’s label of Gieve Ltd of London One bullion tassel loose, RN button absent.
Tailcoat of dark blue melton cloth. Cuffs with orange facings and lace distinction for Lieutenant Commander. To the front a double row of gilt buttons. Retaining original quilted lining and tailors label with name A J Burden and date 1st January 1934. Small stitching faults, otherwise GC.
Gold bullion epaulettes with silvered anchor device and Compass rose. Retaining RN buttons Bullion now toned.
Overall Trousers, two pairs with gold lace line (Age wear)
White Gloves
The uniform is contained in two japanned tins with owners name painted to the outside “A.J. BURDEN”. Overall condition GC some age wear to parts
Surgeon Lieutenant Commander Alexander James Burden qualified at the University of Dublin 1928. He is confirmed as serving as Surgeon on HMS Ajax at the Battle of the River Plate. For his actions he was awarded a MID. In February 1940 he married his pre war sweetheart, the ships companies from both Ajax and HMS Exeter giving him a guard of honour. In March 1945 he is noted as serving at HMS Ringtail a Fleet Air Arm Air Station.
