There were a number of variations of the Fiat 500, most of which were based on the standard wheelbase, however, in 1961 Fiat launched an estate version called the “Giardiniera” (Gardener).
The new body shape and the practicality of more space were achieved through an extension of the wheelbase and laying the engine on its side under the floor at the rear. The result was a 500 with usable rear seats, a generous boot with a single side-hinged rear door, rear hinged 'suicide' doors as per the 500D and a full length fabric sun-roof that folded right back so that all aboard could enjoy the sounds and smells of open top motoring. It was found capable of carrying four adults and 2.5cwt of luggage while returning an impressive 46.8mpg and a maximum speed of 60mph.
In 1968 production of the Giardiniera was moved to Fiat’s Autobianchi factory in Desio, Milan in late 1968 and these cars were still badged as Autobianchi’s for a couple of years before being changed to Fiat.
This model is one of the rarest examples of the Fiat 500 line up and according to Fiat's production archives, they make up just 3% of the total Fiat 500 production, so they are becoming very very collectible.
The example shown here was built in the Fiat Autobianchi plant in Desio, Milan, Italy in April 1973 - Chassis No: 120 * 298523 and is finished in White with Black vinyl trim. The car has only just arrived from Italy and has been MOT'd and registered .
As is very typical with Italian cars, there is no previous history with the car, but it has recently been the subject of a cosmetic restoration and mechanical overhaul in Italy. It is in lovely condition throughout , drives beautifully and is a very practical little car.
It will be a very good investment for the future and will also make an excellent advertising/publicity vehicle for shops and tradesmen!
