AN AWARD MEDAL FOR THE ACADEMY OF ANCIENT MUSIC, 1750. An Academy of Ancient music award medal, obverse with a student standing at a harpsichord being crowned with a laurel wreath by Apollo, the vanquished Marsyas bound to a tree to the distance. Reverse 'In Acknowledgment of Merit Academy of Ancient Music London MDCL Pepusch Praese', all with in a serpent of eternity. Pepusch being the German composer and founder of the Academy. Signed to both sides by Richard Yeo (fl.1746-79), the obverse after 'Apollo rewarding merit and punishing Arrogance' by Andrea Saachi. 47 mm. (Medallic Illustrations 362) (Eimer 628). In a circular medal box with Shagreen effect finish, possibly the original box.
