EARLY LETTER WITH 2-RING "*POST OFFICE*/[Lion/Crown]/ADELAIDE" AT INTER-COLONIAL RATE TO N.S.W.; 16 Oct, 1840 EL (some edge wear & some reinforced folds but complete) from "Glenshay, Mount Barker" to Bathurst charged "2s/1d" (?) - presumably 9d internal postage plus 4d intercolonial rate - with a partly very fine 2-RING "*POST OFFICE*/[Lion/Crown]/ADELAIDE" mark on the front and a mainly very fine crowned oval "GENERAL POST OFFICE/SYDNEY" d.s. (23 Dec.) on the top flap. Believed to be the 2nd earliest recorded S.A. cover addressed to N.S.W., and unusual being sent between country towns in the two states. Interesting contents ("...we are in possession of the most beautiful property in Mount Barker...") from "Allan McFarlane", long-lived pioneer S.A. pastoralist (see A.D.N.B.). [Ex John Bell.] Cross Reference: NEW SOUTH WALES
