A RARE WEDGWOOD CREAMWARE TEAPOT FOR THE WORSHIPFUL COMPANY OF SHIPWRIGHTS, AND PROBABLY COMMEMORATING THE LAUNCH OF H.M.S. ADVENTURE AT DEPTFORD IN 1784
of globular form, with foliate moulded spout, painted to one side with the Shipwrights' arms in red, black and yellow, and the monogram with date WK / 1784 within a cartouche, and the reverse with a ship's frames raised on a launching ramp, the cover possibly a replacement -- 7in. (18cm.) high

On the base of the teapot is an early 20th Century label (now rubbed) on which is typed: Probably made to commemorate the launching of H.M.S. Adventure; The Adventure was the nameship for a class of eight and built by Perry & Hankey at their Blackwall Yard. A fifth-rate of 44 guns, she displaced 896 tons and was launched on 19th July 1784, at a cost of £16,720.8.4d. Alternating between Foreign and Channel commissions, she took a French privateer in 1786 but was laid up in ordinary between 1802-16 when she was broken up at Sheerness.
