THE DOLPHIN CABINET: AN ELIZABETHAN OAK COURT CUPBOARD
basically late 16th century, the rectangular top with a dentil moulding below and two drawers with lunette-carved fronts flanked by foliate corbels, the door with a recessed panel carved with a stylised flowerhead enclosed by a scalework border and the canted side panels carved with stylised serpents within conforming borders, the gadrooned supports with carved lower elements, the base with a long lunette-carved frieze drawer over an "egg and dart"moulded frieze,
the base with conforming "cup and cover"supports and a platform incorporating a fret-carved apron and square tapering block feet, 130cm x 122cm wideProvenance: Recorded in a painting of the Great Hall at Sandford Orcas in 1880, at that time with a shaped panel top. Almost certainly a Victorian "improvement"since removed. According to family records an almost identical court cupboard appeared at auction in 1980 where it was described as having originated from the Salisbury area.
