Fine Victorian silver centrepiece, by Frederick Elkington, Birmingham 1868, in Egyptian Revival style, the top originally adorned with a glass bowl and now housing a similarly hallmarked silver sconce, with three scrolled branches supporting urn shaped sconces, united by chains to a central amphora shaped column, supported by griffins, raised on triform dog leg supports centred with anthemion, over a triform beaded base with an inscription 'Presented by the City of Chester to John Walker Esq. Town Clerk on the visit of HRH The Prince of Wales 1869', the whole raised on a mirrored stand with conforming marks and concealed silver feet, weighable silver weight approx. 5.12kg, height 67.5cm, the stand 33cm wide

More Information

Contrary to our description, we now believe that on top of the centrepiece, there may have been a central stick emanating from the top, having a wide drip tray, a column and then the sconce on top, rather than a bowl.
The sconce and nozzle are still present; other components are missing.
There are slight bends to the anthemion triform top, we are missing one of the hooks that supports the chains from the scrolled arms. The chains are all present. One of the scrolled arms is slightly bent meaning the sconce is out of vertical.
The base is inscribed. The hallmarking is clear throughout. The stand has its original mirrored plate. There are conforming hallmarks, some light dents around the outer edge. Original mahogany base with silver hinged feet.
In short, good overall condition with missing elements.
