Lucas Sithole is one of the most recognised and celebrated South African sculptors. While the artist is most well-known for his use of native woods to carve elongated figures, the artist also completed various paintings and drawings on paper which allowed him to extend his themes related to growing up in apartheid-era South Africa to a two-dimensional surface.

The buffalo is a recurring motif for the artist, acting as the subject for his monumental bronze sculpture, Wounded Buffalo, commissioned to symbolise the 69 000 South African mineworkers that died in mining-related accidents between 1900 and 1993. The artist’s representation of the buffalo is richly imbued with metaphor, but rather than depicting a stricken, beaten buffalo such as that shown in his sculptural works, the iconic buffalo in Lot 381 seems to have been caught in motion. Leaning forward, with one foot lifted off the ground, as if a about to stamp, the work captures the spirit of the oppressed during the time that Sithole was practicing. The dynamic energy that seemingly eminates from the work indicates the enduring-spirit within those that suffered in a repressive South Africa during apartheid rule.
