This is a classic example of the artist's early mature work which was marked by tiers of colours in bands and oblongs, softly glowing, stacked on the canvas. Rothko uses colour as a powerful way to express basic human emotions such as tragedy, ecstasy and doom. He wanted people to be moved by his evocative colour juxtapositions and floating clouds of pigment. The painting is certainly compelling in this way and his choice of colours suggest the work of an artist that Rothko greatly admired, Piet Mondrian. H: 97cm W: 84cm D: 3cm
