RARE HENRY VIII TUDOR OVERDOOR, NOSTELL PRIORY, WYNN OF GWYDYR AND PLAS MAWR, NORTH WALES, DATED 1538. The breakfront pediment above a horizontal panel relief carved with renaissance interlace of foliage and dragons, having two sidesmen supporting a cartouche with central merchant’s mark having inversed initials ‘M W’ for Maurice Wynn, c.1520-1580, flanked by acanthus carved brackets. Above a larger tympanum shaped panel with deep arcade, carved in high relief with a pair of Centaurs supporting an armorial of a crowned maiden on a base of lilies, the symbol of the Mercers Company, further flanked by a pair of inset Tudor roses. Inscribed and dated in raised gothic script lettering ‘ANNO ~ DOMINI ~ 1538’. With spandrel brackets to the door arch carved with male and female heads set within a cornucopia of trailing foliage, all flanked by renaissance pillars elaborately carved with spirals, leaves, lancet crosses, pomegranates and fluted tracery, originally polychrome painted in red ochre, still retaining a substantial amount of base colour, with a natural dry patination. Being an overdoor and frame from an internal panelled room. 125cm wide approx 300cm high Provenance - Purchased from Nostell Priory, Wakefield, Yorkshire. Christies Auction on instruction of the Winn family, 30 April – 1 May, 1990. Note - Nostell Priory was purchased by the Wynn’s (Winn) of Gwydir Castle, Wales, in 1654. They had made their fortune in the fabric trade in London in the Tudor period. Nostell was a partially converted Priory after the reformation with later 16th and 17th century additions, it was this property and land the Wynn’s acquired. The auction consisted of furniture and furnishings from over four centuries, including a great tester Bed made for the second Baronets second marriage in 1673 which Beedham Antiques also bought. In the immediate grounds close to the house is the late medieval church of St Michael and Our Lady, Wragby, the local parish church. Within it are various Tudor and renaissance interior fixtures and fittings in Oak that were installed by the Wynn’s. This Overdoor appears to never have been installed within Nostell nor was it used in the Church. Having the merchants mark of Maurice Wynn, plus the Mercers Company armorial on the overdoor strongly suggests it was brought with them from one of the other Wynn properties. Whether it was from the family seat at Gwydir or their London property linked to the fabric trade is presently not known.

Historically, the Beedham family ran pubs in the South Yorkshire area for over 250 years and in former times it was custom and practice that an incoming pub landlord would take over the whole of the items in the establishment from the previous landlord. It was in this way the Beedham Collection really started. Herbert Beedham, my father, was the first of the family to leave the public house trade and he started up his own Antique business, and brought to the business a wealth of furniture and objects which had been passed down by the family over many years. Herbert had a great passion for early items and would regularly visit the antique and ‘junk’ shops of Sheffield, coming back, much to my mother’s dismay, with yet more antiques and collectables. It was during this time he struck up a friendship with the curator of the Graves Art Gallery in Sheffield who introduced Herbert to the, at that time, unknown L S Lowry, from whom he subsequently tried desperately and sadly unsuccessfully to buy a painting. Herbert’s greatest passion was to collect Tudor and Elizabethan Manor House furniture and objects. A Daily Telegraph reporter once visited his shop and wrote an article in the paper emphasising the love that he showed for his items, running his hands over the polished surfaces. Beedham Antiques was established in 1974 and moved to Holme Hall in Bakewell Derbyshire a large Grade I listed 15th/16th Manor House (pictured) where many of the privately owned pieces pieces for sale in this collection were displayed in their authentic surroundings. Paul Beedham, Herbert's son, took over the business in 2012 and has proudly celebrated its 50th year anniversary and is carrying on its tradition of supplying the finest Tudor, Elizabethan and Jacobean furniture to important Manor Houses and collectors. Since our family were great private collectors, many of the pieces on display in the saleroom have not been seen on the market for a number of decades. Beedham Family Bishop & Miller Auctioneers
