BRITISH OCCUPATION OF RANGOON - OFFICER'S "INGERAM/POST PAID" Ship Letter" TO G.B.; 5 Jan. 1825 EL from Lieut. W. Gossip (killed later that year in an attack by the Burmese) in "Rangoon" (where the British forces had finally repulsed the Burmese Army on 15 December, partly thanks to the use of Congreve Rockets) to Yorkshire (redirected from Wetherby to Bridlington) with mainly fine & rare boxed "INGERAM/POST NOT PAID", framed "INDIA LETTER/DEAL" and "TADCASTER/186" mileage mark . The front endorsed 'Ship Letter' and with double-oval "OUT STATION/MADRAS/SHIP LETTER" transit d.s. Contents ref. We came here with 600 and odd bayonets and of the half are fit to march we shall have been the most fortunate corps here - the 13th Lt, Infantry came here something much stronger tha n ourselves and have 80 marching....Simmons is gone with 60 men up the river in the steamboat to reconnoitre some stockades.
