£300
An ornate mid-19th century mother of pearl fan, the guards entirely of carved and pierced gilt metal, set with turquoise stones, the upper section with an oval mirror, the gorge sticks shaped with a very decorative head, and elaborately carved to show several pairs of lovebirds amongst flowers, brightly gilded, the painted leaf, of vellum, showing a pastoral scene with wealthy, well dressed ladies, a chaperone and two suitors, the latter entertaining their friends with music, accompanied by a shepherd and his sheep, a fountain and roses to the reserves. The verso is painted with a similar pastoral scene, with a suitor entertaining a lady in company of a chaperone, and a young couple, this time perhaps a shepherdess with sheep, watching from the other bank of a stream, guard approx. 27cm, contained in a rather distressed fan box covered in floral woven silk, lined with a purple damask silk, and labelled for “Julian Gonzales, Succesor de Sera, Madrid, Arenal 22, Duplicado” (2)
The monture appears in very good condition. The guards are sturdy and heavy. The leaf is slightly rubbed to both sides and has some nicks and small splits to some folds
