First published in Paris in 1500 when Erasmus was in his early thirties, it originally contained 818 proverbs. Over his lifetime, Erasmus expanded the collection through about twenty editions, eventually amassing 4,151 proverbs. In 1515, he renamed the work Adagiorum Chiliades, a title that remained until the final edition in 1533. The collection features major literary figures such as Cicero, Horace, Aristophanes, and Plato, along with lesser-known authors, and includes many quotations in Greek and Aramaic.
