City of New York. 1864 (Mar 19) Small cover to Italy bearing four 10c green stamps, red "New York Paid 12" c.d.s and boxed "PD", carried on the Inman Line "City of New York" which struck a reef when approaching Queenstown and became a total loss, the passengers and mails all saved and landed at Queenstown on March 29th. Arrival datestamps, flap missing, otherwise fine and rare, with a contemporary magazine illustration of the stranded ship. The only cover from this wreck recorded by Hoggarth & Gwynn in "Maritime Disaster Mail", ex Wood. Photo on Page 94.
