CAPTN. [SIKUNDER] BURNES - WHO WAS 1st KABUL CASUALTY IN 1st AFGHAN WAR - COVER TO JOSEPH HUME; 25 June 1834 E (partial Arabic red wax seal) sent locally in London to the famous politician and Postal Reformer "Joseph Hume Esqr., M.P., 6 Bryanston Square" with fine London h.s. "2" charge-mark and mainly v. fine boxed "T.P/Regent St N.O". There is no contents but Hume, in his distinctive writing, noted on the front that the letter was from "Captn. Burnes, the traveller", and a comparison on the handwriting of the address matches a known Burnes letter (copy and other research notes included). Burnes was in London from 12 Mar. to 16 July 1834 as part of his GB tour to organise the publication of his "Travels into Bokhara..." record of his pioneering travels around Afghanistan and Persia. Burnes returned to Afghanistan in 1835 and was the first casualty in Kabul when he was murdered on 2 Nov. 1841. Burnes covers are understandably very rare.Cross Reference: INDIA, AFGHANISTAN
