WW2 North Africa Campaign British Empire Medal (Military), 1939-1945, Africa (North Africa 1942-43 bar), Italy Stars, Defence Medal and BWM to 7622844 Armt Q.M.S. George S. Longworth (WW2 un-named as issued) very fine and better, mounted in a frame. Would have been entitled to 8th Amy bar, not North Africa bar.
George Samuel Longworth's BEM was announced in the London gazette dated 14th October 1943. With a copy of recommendation from 8th Army Troops Workshop and signed by Gen Montgomery:
"Period 1st August 1942 - 1st April 1943. In eight months continuous service in the desert, throughout the whole of the present campaign, A.Q.M.S. Longworth, in charge of M.T. Repairs in this workshop, has worked with a zeal and ability far above the normal standard.Although often asked to do jobs outside his normal sphere of activity, he had never yet been beaten by a job. His outstanding capacity for hard work and long hours, and his unfailing cheerfulness, often under the most trying conditions, have been a shining example to all who have worked with him, and have inspired the men under him to put forth greater and greater efforts. Time after time, after a hard day's work in the heat of the desert, he has worked on until long after midnight on some special job, never calling in vain for volunteers to help him.
Three days before the Brigade we were then serving moved up to Alamein, Q.M.S. Longworth, with only five trained fitters to help him, working day and night, changed fifteen engines in 25-Pdr Gun Tractors. These Tractors then towed their guns straight to the battle of Alamein."
