VICTORIA, MAHE- THE UNIQUE 'BRIDGE' TYPE CANCEL: 20 Aug 1931 US Reply Card (3c) to Chicago cancelled by the recently discovered "VICTORIA" bridge-type canceller. It is known that a canceller was issued for Victoria but believed that the Postmaster held it in reserve as his office datestamp and was not put into postal service. No other evidence of postal use has been found other than a part strike on a KGVI 9c adhesive dated 9-1-41. Initials on reverse of card are those of S Mathiot, assistant Postmaster at time of use. Lot also inc. several dubious examples of adhesives with strikes of a bridge-type canceller, either forgeries or a second canceller as yet unrecorded. (1 card plus 5 stamps)
