William Salmon, M.D. (1644-1712) published various works on medicine, astrology, and other subjects. His Herbal was intended for the use of "Physicians, Chyrurgians, and Apothecaries" (Preface). This herbal includes the first known reference of the tomato's cultivation in North America, when Salmon mentions his travels in what is now the Carolinas.
