Small-format representations of figures are at the center of the work of Austrian painter Alfred Buchta. He received his first training in the modern painting school of Anton Ažbe, which Wassily Kandinsky and Alexej von Jawlensky also attended. Buchta then studied with Anton Faistauer and Anton Kolig at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna in the painting class of Alois Delug. After working briefly as a civil servant in the financial directorate and as a drawing teacher in Trieste, he moved to Venice, where he worked as a freelance artist and art critic. After World War I, he returned to Vienna and became a member of the Vienna Künstlerhaus. Buchta was characterized by Rudolf Schmidt as a "Post-Impressionist with cultivated colorfulness." Honors: Künstlerhaus Anniversary Prize (1925), Dumba Prize (1932), Honorary Prize of the Academy of Fine Arts (1935), Golden Laurel of the Künstlerhaus (1958).
