A COLLECTION OF MAUCHLINE WARE
Comprising: two sewing thread dispensers, two napkin rings, two trinket chests, three tot measure containers and two page turners (11)
Typically made from the wood of the sycamore tree, Mauchline ware was made famous by the Smith family of Mauchline in Ayrshire, now Strathclyde, in Scotland. Made during the latter half of the 19th century, thousands of articles were produced as souvenirs as well as useful household items. Great quantities were also exported, however demand declined with the advent of photography and production ceased during the 1930s.
