This highly original 1962 Triumph TR4 was originally exported to Virginia USA in the late part of 1962, and therefore carries all of the detailed improvements made through 1962 as the model moved through its first year of sale, approximately 90% of which were to the USA. Specifically, it has the later and stronger chassis frame and steering rack arrangement, full core radiator, long bulge bonnet to clear the original brass top SU H6 carburettors etc. It is the popular white dashboard model, which was superseded in the USA toward the end of production of the TR4 and in all markets on the later IRS TR4a.
This particular car is matching numbers (commission, body, engine are original and as it left the factory) and remarkably the vast majority of date stamped parts indicate that they too are from its original production (for example the wiper motor, gearbox and various LUCAS ancillaries). The car retains all of its rare and hard to find small parts and is unusual in that it is unrestored and very complete, even though it has clearly been repainted once and partly retrimmed over the years. The chassis and body, together with its original panel work which are the major cost items in a TR4 are all good requiring only cosmetic improvement and the engine / gearbox and axle were all believed rebuilt or refreshed prior to the car making its way to the UK. The new wire wheels and Pirelli Cinturato tyres are recent fitments with little use over the past three years.
The current owner is a well know TR Register member and marque expert who purchased the car personally from the former owner of 30 years, noting at the time that the car is completely rot free and undamaged, which is incredibly rare in an imported car, and especially so in unrestored condition. The original intention was to restore to concours condition and this sale is only possible because of the need to progress a much-delayed restoration of an ex works rally car of the same model. The car is an ideal candidate for either a full restoration to concours standard or a ‘rolling’ restoration as it is used and enjoyed.
The car has been in storage since importation to the UK, runs and drives (although some light service and recommissioning before use on the road is advised) and comes with the usual bill of sale and NOVA letter, demonstrating that all UK taxes are paid and a UK V5C can be applied for at no further cost. The car comes with both tonneau and soft top plus the frame, new spare wheel and Pirelli tyre as above.
