£800
EL von Weber, a marble model of a maiden with a hydria, late 19th century; portrayed as standing, her hair tied up and falling down her neck, with nude torso and draped from the waist, leaning forwards, her weight on her right leg; the integrally modelled base inscribed EL v Weber, 88cm high; atop a later rectangular white marble socle and a concrete slab, 102cm high overall Note: Cf. Christie's London, Nineteenth Century Furniture & Works of Art, 29th February 1996, lot 406 for a marble group by the same sculptor. Von Weber seems to be something of an enigmatic figure, with little apparently known about him. Certainly he was of German heritage and working in London in the late 19th century, but he was very far from prolific and almost none of his work has appeared at auction. The Russell-Cotes Art Gallery in Bournemouth does hold one work by the artist, a work of a similar subject and size, Phryne.
