Fritz Mühsam studied painting in Berlin and Munich. After that he lived as a freelance artist in Berlin. He mainly created portraits, landscapes and still lifes. In 1927 he was represented in the group exhibition "European Art of the Present" in Hamburg. He was a full member of the Deutscher Künstlerbund, with which he exhibited three times between 1928 and 1931, but in whose membership lists he is listed only until 1929. In 1931 Mühsam gave up his Berlin apartment and moved to Paris, where he also taught (Frédéric H. Muhsam). In the 1930s he came into closer contact with the Garman-Epstein family. Two portraits of children by Esther and Theo Garman, which Mühsam painted in 1934, are now in the New Art Gallery Walsall collection.
