R.M.S. CARPATHIA: Souvenir silk postcard from the R.M.S. Carpathia which navigated dangerous ice fields to rescue 711 survivors from the ship's lifeboats. The 5¼ins. x 3½ins. Postally used war-date postcard Washington on October 6th 1917. The front of the postcard displays a silk insert showing two hands clasped beneath crossed American and British flags, with the legend: 'Hands Across the Sea Woven in Silk R.M.S. CARPATHIA'. Less than a year later, on 17 July 1918, the Carpathia sank after being torpedoed three times by the German submarine U-55 off the southern Irish coast.
