Cunard No.7 Tricycle
Manufactured by F.J. Gibbons of Church Lane, Wolverhampton. Price new was £24 10s.
Solid-tyred tricycle with 40in rear wheels and 26in front wheel using 3/4in tyring. On crescent steel rims and steel barrel hubs with brass flanges. Maker's name, patent date & number on hub flanges. Rod operated band brake to rear axle. Mudguard on front wheel only. Model features Gibbons' patent automatic (self-centring) steering, sprung headset (front suspension) and detachable offside wheel. Finish is the original black. Fitted with Tony Huntington made saddle.
Current owner acquired the machine from fellow V-CC member. It is believed the original owner was Sir Bernard Wilson who was the tenant at Hughenden Manor, Bucks 1881-1889 after Benjamin Disraeli’s death. Machine subsequently found under a woodpile (probably in the late 1980s) by a tradesman working there who then purchased the remains from the National Trust and sold them to the V-CC member who restored the tricycle.
All of the machine is in original condition except for one of the rear wheels which had been ‘exposed to the elements’ and needed to be completely replaced. The machine has been used extensively at V-CC and public events and also to give cycle history demonstrations at schools.
A very rare machine – currently only one other is known. Ready to ride.
