1882 Queen Victoria Heaton Mint bronze Penny with 12+N dies (S 3955). Obverse: type 12, left-facing laureate bust by Leonard Charles Wyon with no curls at the nape of her neck and larger lettering that reads 'VICTORIA D: G: BRITT: REG: F: D:'. Reverse: type N seated thinner Britannia with trident and shield, a lighthouse to the left and sailing ship to the right, this design also by Leonard Charles Wyon. The words 'ONE PENNY' are shown above, with the date (1882) and a tiny 'H' below for Heaton and Sons. Edge: plain. Weight: 9.35g. Diameter: 30.7mm. Mintage: 7,526,000. Grade: EF - Extremely Fine, storage toned.This Penny was produced by Heaton and Sons, a firm later known as the Birmingham Mint. Founded by Ralph Heaton II, this prolific privately owned mint struck coinage for various territories across the expanding British Empire, initially using coining equipment purchased from Matthew Boulton's defunct Soho Mint. From 1874, the Royal Mint, experiencing high demand, outsourced the minting of domestic copper coinage, including Pennies, Halfpennies and Farthings to Heaton. These coins bear a tiny 'H' mintmark below the date to indicate their origins.
